Nigeria’s national electricity grid experienced another collapse on Monday, October 14, 2024, at approximately 6:18 pm, leaving millions of Nigerians without power. This marks the latest in a series of grid failures that have plagued the country’s power infrastructure.
According to data from the national power grid, electricity generation dropped sharply from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 pm to 3.56 gigawatts at 6 pm, before completely dropping to 0.00 gigawatts at 7 pm and 8 pm.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid collapse in a statement, informing its customers across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States of the loss of supply due to the system failure. The EEDC stated that all its interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations are currently out of supply.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) notified its customers of the power outage, attributing it to the system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm. The AEDC assured its customers that it is working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.
Both distribution companies remain on standby, awaiting detailed information about the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo.
The frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national power grid have been a persistent challenge, hampering economic activities and leaving many households and businesses reliant on expensive diesel-powered generators. The government has pledged to invest in and reform the power sector, but tangible improvements remain elusive for many Nigerians.
