THE presidency has clarified why Nigeria did not participate in the 2024 United Nations Human Rights Council elections, which took place on October 9, 2024.

In a press statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was emphasized that Nigeria was not excluded from the election.

The statement explained that any votes mistakenly attributed to Nigeria during the election were likely cast in error by other countries.

It noted that in international elections, countries typically receive regional endorsements when competing for positions.

Noting that Nigeria’s focus has been on supporting these endorsed candidates to strengthen African representation on the global stage.

The presidency urged media outlets to verify their information before publishing and warned against spreading narratives that could damage Nigeria’s reputation in international affairs.
