The House of Representatives has again summoned the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, over the spate of kidnappings and other security challenges in the FCT.
In February, the House had summoned Wike alongside Mr Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA and security heads over insecurity in the FCT via a motion during plenary by Dominic Okafor, a lawmaker from Anambra state, who lamented that the issue of insecurity in the FCT was โvery disappointing and unbefitting of a federal capital city.โ
The lawmaker through his motion had argued that, โThe federal capital territory is and remains the seat of the federal government from where national policies are formulated, headquarters of federal government agencies are domiciled, international edifices are located, majority of foreigners and visitors are resident,โ Okafor said.
โThe level of insecurity raving the centre of unity in recent times, is, to say the least, very disappointing and unbefitting of a federal capital city where there are escalating cases of โone chanceโ, armed robberies, banditry and rampant kidnappings and killings,โ he had said.
Also, in February, the upper house, the senate, through a motion sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP-Delta North) summoned Wike, and then FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, over insecurity.
The Senate, by the motion, also urged the Inspector-General of Police (IG) to install CCTV cameras in strategic locations within and around Abuja, highways, and other major capital cities across the country to bolster surveillance and deter criminal activities.
That resolution has not been obeyed with daily reports of attacks and kidnappings being reported in the FCT.
The latest summon, which was also extended to the Commissioner of Police, Peter Opara, and the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Adeola Ajayi, to appear before the House Committees on FCT, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence, followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Ismail Dabo during plenary on Tuesday.
Dabo explained that he recently lost his aide to operatives of โone chance,โ who dumped her body by the roadside after robbing her.
