Alex Ikwechegh: Police detain lawmaker for alleged assault on Bolt driver in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained a lawmaker for allegedly assaulting a driver in Abuja.

Police Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh โ€œis currently at the Maitama Police Station for questioning.โ€

In a statement on Monday, the Command reported that Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya lodged a complaint with the authorities.

โ€œPreliminary investigations reveal that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose over the delivery method. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly assaulted.โ€

The statement expressed concern over Hon. Ikwecheghโ€™s alleged dismissal of police authority, noting that after reportedly slapping the driver, he allegedly remarked, โ€œYou can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,โ€ displaying a concerning disregard for law enforcement.

The suspect is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station, according to the statement.

FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a comprehensive investigation, pledging that an impartial inquiry will be conducted and that legal action will follow based on the findings.

This incident in Nigeria follows a similar case in the United Kingdom, where British MP Mike Amesbury was caught on video apparently punching a man to the ground and continuing the attack, prompting the ruling Labour Party to suspend him pending an investigation.
