The House of Representatives has referred Alex Mascot, a member accused of threatening and assaulting a Bolt driver, to the House Ethics Committee.
The decision came after Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere raised a point of order on Tuesday.
The controversy surrounding Mascot stems from an incident involving a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, whom Mascot allegedly assaulted and threatened to make “disappear.”
Following the incident, the Nigeria Police Force summoned Mascot for questioning.
In a statement issued earlier, Mascot expressed deep remorse for his actions.
“I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently. A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behaviour towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me. I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official,” he stated.
Mascot recognized the trust placed in him by his constituents and the Nigerian people, admitting that his behavior fell short of the expected standards.
“I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation at large,” he added.
He also assured the public of his full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation, emphasizing his support for ensuring justice is served.
“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable,” Mascot concluded.
The disciplinary actions by the House reflect a growing commitment among lawmakers to uphold ethical standards and accountability within their ranks.
The outcome of the ethics committee’s review remains to be seen as the situation develops.
