THE Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities is scheduled to meet with the Federal Government today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. to address the ongoing strike.
SSANU Vice-President Abdussobur Salaam confirmed this morning that the union received an official invitation from the Federal Government on yesterday night.
“We received a formal invitation last night. The meeting will take place at 11 a.m. today, presided over by the Minister of State for Education in the Minister’s Conference Room,” he stated.
The unions, operating under the JAC, initiated an indefinite strike on Monday due to four months of unpaid salaries, resulting in a nationwide halt of university activities.
SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim pointed out that senior university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also not received their salaries, further affecting university operations.
He noted that 98% of members have adhered to the strike and will not resume work until their demands are fulfilled.
“It is a long-term struggle because this strike also involves Vice-Chancellors, bursars, registrars, and other senior administrators who have not been paid. The impact is significant, and no one from the government has contacted us. We have withdrawn our services, and our members are determined not to return to work until all salaries are paid,” he said.
He added that compliance with the strike has been encouraging, with a 98% adherence rate.
The unions are demanding, among other things, the payment of the four months of withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
