THE Governor of Kaduna State Uba Sani has urged elected local government chairmen to distribute the dividend of democracy fairly, regardless of political affiliation, gender, religious beliefs, or ethnic background.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the chairmen held at the Council Chambers of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna yesterday, the Governor emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in managing public finances.
He reminded them that they are now leading local governments at a time when the third tier of government has been granted financial autonomy.
“Your allocations from the Federation Account will be publicly known, making transparency and accountability essential. Be available, accessible, responsive, and fair in your dealings,” he stated.
Governor Sani noted that local government chairmen are grassroots leaders closest to the people, and therefore, they should serve as the voices, advocates, and champions for their communities.
“Listen to their concerns, address their fears, and harness their potential. Empower the people to engage in governance and ensure their voices are heard. As Robert W. Flack said, ‘Local government is the foundation of democracy; if it fails, democracy will fail,’” he pointed out.
He urged the chairmen to focus on providing rural infrastructure, enhancing agriculture, building and upgrading health centers and primary schools, improving economic and social services, and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
Additionally, Governor Sani encouraged them to align with the state government’s rural transformation agenda and connect communities that lack access to state roads.
“During your campaigns, you engaged with communities, listened to their concerns, and gathered feedback on their needs. I urge you to prioritize these needs, guided by principles of equity, inclusivity, transparency, and accountability,” he said.
“You are taking office at a critical time when the public has high expectations of politicians and leaders. It is your duty to restore their faith in politics and local governance,” he reminded them.
While congratulating the chairmen, he called on the people of Kaduna State to hold their leaders accountable, demand transparency, participate in the budgeting process, and insist on quality service delivery.
The Governor emphasized that public engagement is vital for ensuring transparency, accountability, and quality service in local governments.
