The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said that the air travel demand for airlines in Africa rose by 11.9 per cent in September 2024.
IATA disclosed this in its Air Passenger Market Analysis, seen by NewsNGR.
IATA said that world’s airlines saw diverse developments in passenger load factors but added that North American and Latin American carriers achieved, on average, lower load factors this month compared to the previous year.
The association said Africa saw the largest increase, with September 2024 Passenger load factor (PLF)being 3.6 percentage points (ppt) higher than the previous year, reaching 76.0 per cent.
PLF is a metric used in the aviation industry to measure how well an airline is using its available seating capacity.
On Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs), IATA said that in September 2024, airlines in the Asia Pacific region contributed the most to the industry’s total RPKs growth, accounting for over half of the increase in traffic.
The RPK is a measure of the volume of passengers carried by an airline.
According to IATA, Europe played a significant role in the annual rise in RPK this month again, while North America had the lowest growth among all regions, in contrast to these two important regions.
“Middle East and African carriers achieved rises in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs) close to those of August, with 4.4 per cent and 11.9 per cent Year-on-year,” it added.
IATA revealed that Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs), for African airlines rose by 6.6 per cent.
