EBONYI: Police arrest suspects for dehumanising teenagers

THE Ebonyi State Police Command has apprehended Dennis Ali and Ituma Sunday, the main suspects in a shocking viral video that emerged on social media over the weekend, depicting the stripping, flogging, and dehumanization of two teenage girls.

Reports revealed that the abuse occurred in November 2023 in Ojiegbe, Ngbo community, within the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

The girls, aged between 15 and 16, were accused of stealing chickens and were coerced into parading naked through the community while carrying the alleged stolen fowls.

The video, which circulated widely on social media with the message, โ€œShare it until it reaches government authorities. These girls were subjected to inhumane treatment. Criminal cases have legal penalties as per the criminal code,โ€ captured the policeโ€™s attention.

In a statement from Police spokesperson DSP Joshua Ukandu, it was noted that CP Anthonia Uche-Anya was made aware of the viral video, leading to the swift arrest of the suspects.

He emphasized that upon taking office, the CP highlighted the importance of eliminating trial by ordeal, jungle justice, and self-help in the criminal justice system.

The police chief reiterated the commandโ€™s dedication to eradicating such practices and ensuring justice is served, promising collaboration with stakeholders to effectively tackle the root causes of violence and foster a culture of respect for human rights.
