In a historic tribute to the late Chief Abibat Mogaji, mother of President Bola Tinubu and a steadfast champion of women’s rights, the Federal Government has officially named the ICT block at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD) after her.
This honor, revealed at an unveiling ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, recognizes Mogaji’s legacy as a resilient force in women’s empowerment and grassroots development.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, highlighted Mogaji’s transformative role in advocating for gender inclusion and community-building initiatives across Nigeria.
“We are gathered here to celebrate and honor the remarkable values of gender inclusion, women empowerment, and humanitarian services rendered by a resilient matriarch, mother, and an Amazon,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.
“She was a testament to unwavering commitment in uplifting women, tirelessly creating a more compassionate society where no one is left behind.”
This symbolic renaming of the ICT block reflects the government’s dedication to promoting the rights and inclusion of women in technology—a field that is now essential for economic growth and individual advancement.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized that the block should serve as a reminder of the ongoing work to build a society where every woman and child can fulfill their potential with dignity.
Representing the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Hajiya Nana Shettima underscored the crucial role of information and communication technology (ICT) in transforming women’s lives.
She noted, “Access to ICT is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” adding that technology can bridge the gender gap by providing new opportunities for Nigerian women in both urban and rural areas.
Dr. Asabe Vilita-Bashir, Director General of MBNCWD, paid tribute to Mogaji’s advocacy for women’s economic empowerment and grassroots initiatives, which helped elevate countless women’s lives.
She highlighted the significance of the ICT block as a lasting testament to Mogaji’s vision of an inclusive society.
“Let this ICT block be a constant reminder of the need for inclusivity in our programmes and plans,” she said.
Mrs. Felicia Sani, President of the Nigeria Market Women Association, also spoke at the event, lauding Mogaji as a trailblazer in women’s mobilization and economic advocacy.
She urged the government to continue Mogaji’s work by establishing international markets across Nigeria, empowering women and generating revenue for the country.
This ceremony honors a legacy rooted in resilience and empowerment and highlights Nigeria’s broader commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and social justice.
