Unizik crisis gets messier, as ASUU boycotts new VC ‘s activities

Crisis rocking Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state following appointment of Professor Ifeanyi Odoh as Vice Chancellor got messier as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Wednesday, moved to boycott activities convened by him.

Odoh’s appointment since October 2024 has continued to generate controversy as the Federal Ministry of Education rejected the appointment and that of the Registrar, noting that it did not follow due process.

However, Odoh, upon assumption of office last week explained that his appointment followed due process, and on Tuesday, asked all the university staff engaging in court action against his emergence to withdraw the case immediately, otherwise it would amounts to insubordination to the constituted authority.

But ASUU, in a statement by the Chapter Chairman, Kingsley Ubaoji, on Wednesday, directed all their members not to attend any meeting convened by Odoh at the institution as it would, according to him, amount to legitimising illegality.

“We have been informed of a meeting convened today by Dr. Benard Odoh, whose appointment as the Vice Chancellor of our great University is barred by a court order and has been nullified. Do Not Attend This Meeting.

“His appointment stands against a court order and has been declared null and void by the Federal Ministry of Education (FME). He has no authority to the position he claims. He should avoid precipitating a breakdown of law and order in our University,” it stated.
