President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit.
The invitation comes from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who currently chairs the global economic forum.
The Summit, taking place from November 18 to 19, will bring together leaders from the world’s top economies, as well as the European Union, the African Union, and key multilateral financial institutions. With the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” discussions will center on critical issues such as combating hunger and poverty, reforming global governance institutions, promoting sustainable development, and navigating energy transitions.
Nigeria’s presence at the G20 reflects its growing influence on the global stage. President Tinubu, a strong advocate for reform in international governance systems, is expected to reinforce Nigeria’s call for restructuring global institutions like the United Nations Security Council, where the country seeks a permanent seat.
In addition to participating in the high-level discussions, President Tinubu will hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.
These meetings will aim to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reform agenda and strengthen international partnerships.
The President will be accompanied by a delegation of senior government officials, including Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity;
Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security; Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
The G20 Summit provides an opportunity for Nigeria to collaborate on shared challenges and showcase its commitment to building a sustainable and equitable future. With topics such as food security, energy transition, and poverty eradication taking center stage, Nigeria’s engagement in the discussions will focus on securing solutions that align with its national priorities.
As the summit unfolds, President Tinubu’s participation marks another step in Nigeria’s quest to strengthen its position in global affairs and contribute meaningfully to international development.
The President is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the summit.
