A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has postponed the murder trial of 12 suspects accused of killing female Inspector Christiana Erekere at the Taabaa Police Checkpoint in Rivers State to December 4, 2024, for further hearings.
The trial judge, Justice Augusta Chukwu, made this decision after Sunny Nwokoro, the attorney for the 1st and 3rd defendants, cross-examined a witness, Harrison Emmanuel, a police officer from the Bori Division.
During the cross-examination, Emmanuel alleged that the suspects attacked the late Inspector Christiana with sticks and blocks, leading to her death while being transported to the hospital.
After the proceedings, Nwokoro stated, “We have cross-examined him and he has answered the questions. That’s all I can say; I can’t say more than that.”
Lead Counsel for the police, Mercy Nweke, mentioned that she would refrain from making any comments until the Commissioner of Police is informed about the case.
Recall that the suspects were reportedly traveling from Delta State to Akwa Ibom State for a wedding on April 25, 2024, when they allegedly murdered Inspector Erekere at her duty post in Taabaa Police Station, Khana Local Government Area, after being stopped for a routine check.
