A prominent lawyer, Mike Ofikwu, has tragically lost his life after being shot multiple times by suspected gunmen outside his residence in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to Sewuese Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, the incident occurred on Wednesday night around 8 p.m. when Ofikwu was approached at the gate of his home on Otukpa street.
Neighbors quickly rushed him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning.
Reports suggest that seven gunmen were involved in the attack, firing several shots at close range and even attacking him with a machete.
Ofikwu, a well-known member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the current secretary of the Otukpo branch, was in the process of entering his home after a day’s work.
A fellow lawyer and close colleague described the horrifying events, confirming that Ofikwu passed away at the Federal University of Health Science Teaching Hospital in Otukpo around 1:40 a.m. during treatment.
His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but authorities have launched a full investigation into the tragic incident.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local legal community, with many expressing disbelief at the brutal killing.
The police have yet to provide any updates on possible suspects.
The Benue State Police Command has vowed to continue its investigation in hopes of bringing those responsible for this heinous crime to justice.
