Okonjo-Iweala Re-Appointed WTO Director-General

Nigeria’s former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for a second term.

In a post on Friday via X, the Geneva-based global trade body announced that the organisation’s “members today agreed to give incumbent Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala a second term as Director-General of the WTO,”

According to WTO, Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment approved at a special general council meeting will take effect on September 1, 2025 and will run for four years.

Okonjo-Iweala, 70, was the sole candidate for the high-profile position, but she still needed the support of all 166 WTO members, including the United States, before she was confirmed.

She took office as Director-General in March 2021 and was the first African and the first woman to serve as head of the organization.
