A fire outbreak on Friday night razed multiple buildings used as shops for car spare parts in the Idumota area of Lagos State, causing extensive damage to property worth millions of naira.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday.
He disclosed that emergency response teams were promptly activated following distress calls received via the state’s toll-free emergency lines around 10:20 p.m.
“On arrival at the scene at 10:55 p.m., it was discovered that multiple buildings serving as shops for car spare parts were engulfed in flames,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He added that while the immediate or remote cause of the fire remains unclear, the inferno destroyed goods and property estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of naira.
The fire was combated by a coordinated effort involving the LASEMA Shark Response Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, LASEMA Tiger Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Fire Service.
These agencies worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to adjoining buildings.
Law enforcement agencies also maintained crowd control to ensure safety and order at the scene.
Thankfully, no lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded during the incident.
The incident highlights the importance of adhering to fire safety measures, particularly in markets with high concentrations of combustible materials.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and prevent future occurrences.
