The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to introduce mystery shoppers equipped with body cameras to evaluate the performance of security agencies at airport screening points.
FAAN Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, disclosed this during a meeting with heads of security agencies at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, to tackle issues of touting and passenger harassment.
Kuku directed the removal of manual search tables at screening areas, insisting on greater reliance on technology to streamline passenger interactions.
A statement by FAAN spokesperson, Obiageli Orah, outlined the new measures.
It read: “Kuku reaffirmed that FAAN directors would actively engage in monitoring efforts, as existing task forces were directed to intensify their activities.
“According to her, any officer found guilty of misconduct must be reported to their agency head without delay.”
At the meeting, Kuku also launched Operation AirClean, a collaborative initiative backed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
“The initiative was developed to improve collaboration among agencies and streamline passenger search processes, ultimately enhancing the overall travel experience.
“It also aims to eliminate extortion and harassment of passengers, as well as to completely eradicate touting activities at the airport,” the statement added.
FAAN’s move is part of broader reforms to ensure accountability and improve service delivery across Nigerian airports.
