Dele Farotimi remanded as Court adjourns bail hearing to December 20

The Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has ordered the remand of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, in prison custody.

Farotimi was returned to custody after the court adjourned the hearing of his bail application to December 20, 2024, Naija News reports.

His arraignment follows allegations of defamation leveled against him by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola. The accusations are tied to Farotimiโ€™s book, โ€œNigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,โ€ where he alleged that Babalola influenced Supreme Court judges.

Farotimi, who was arrested in Lagos and transferred to Ekiti State, is facing a 16-count charge. He pleaded not guilty to all charges during the court session.

The police prosecutor requested that he remain in custody pending further investigation, while Farotimiโ€™s legal counsel argued for his release on bail, emphasizing the principle of presumption of innocence.

Further updates on the case are expected.
