The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed deep confusion and concern over the recent blockade of the Gidan Rumfa Palace by security operatives, which took place last week.
The action, conducted by the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), has left the emirate in a state of uncertainty, as no official explanation has been provided for the unusual security measures.
During a visit from a delegation from Bichi on Wednesday, the Emir voiced his frustration regarding the lack of communication about the blockade.
“This incident is simply a distraction. We still don’t know why it happened, and those involved have not explained their actions. However, this will not stop our activities,” Sanusi II stated firmly.
The blockade restricted all movement in and out of the palace, leading to speculation about its motives.
While security agencies have refrained from commenting, insiders suggest that the drastic measure may be linked to the upcoming installation of Munir Sanusi as the new District Head of Bichi or potentially related to ongoing discussions surrounding controversial tax reform bills being considered by the government.
In response to the situation, the Kano State Government has condemned the actions of the Federal Government, accusing security forces of overstepping their authority.
Despite the turmoil, Emir Sanusi II assured the Bichi delegation that the installation ceremony for their new District Head would proceed as planned on a new date, alleviating concerns over the continuity of local governance.
“I assure you that another day will be fixed, and your District Head will surely be brought to you. Everything will take place peacefully,” he promised, urging the community to maintain calm and continue promoting peace.
The Emir emphasized the importance of peace during his address, encouraging the residents of Bichi to remain prayerful and united.
“Go and inform the public to remain peaceful and prayerful. Whatever the situation, peace and prayer will surely take us to the end of the tunnel,” he said, advocating for harmony amidst the uncertainty.
Reflecting on his personal ties to Bichi, Sanusi II described the town as his “second home,” sharing nostalgic memories of his childhood visits during school vacations.
“I know nowhere more than Bichi. It is a land of educated persons with good religious ideology,” he remarked, highlighting the community’s positive attributes.
The delegation from Bichi, which included notable figures such as Hamza Sule Maifata, Chairman of the Local Government; Mallam Lawan Abubakar, Chief Imam of Bichi; and Mallam Isyaka Bichi, Chairman of the Elders Forum, pledged their loyalty to the Emirate and expressed gratitude for the appointment of Munir Sanusi.
