The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Bayelsa election, Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, Commodore Benjamin Nathus (retd.), have officially resigned from the party.
Eradiri, who finished third in the election, submitted his resignation letter to the party’s state chairman in Yenagoa on December 8.
Titled Letter of Withdrawal as Labour Party Member, the letter cited his decision to seek a platform better equipped to provide the leadership Bayelsa deserves.
In his letter, Eradiri expressed gratitude to party members who supported his vision for a better Bayelsa State, stating, “Unfortunately, we couldn’t overcome the intrigues and challenges embedded in the party leadership.”
He described his time in the party as a valuable experience but said his decision to leave had the backing of his loyalists.
Similarly, Nathus explained his decision in a separate statement released Thursday, saying, “I am profoundly grateful for the support and camaraderie of party members who shared in our vision for a thriving Bayelsa. The journey has been enriched with invaluable experiences and insights.”
Both politicians emphasised their commitment to finding a platform aligned with their vision for transformative governance in Bayelsa State.
Eradiri revealed that consultations were ongoing to determine their next political move.
“We are consulting seriously and engaging all stakeholders to determine the next political party to join. Our next party of interest will be one that enables us to serve the people and advance Bayelsa,” he said.
Reports also indicate that many local government chairmen of the Labour Party in Bayelsa have followed suit, joining Eradiri and Nathus in leaving the party.
