After 35 years of dedicated service, the Nigerian military retired 656 senior non-commissioned officers (SNCOs) on Thursday, following a six-month demilitarisation training at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi.
The retirees included 535 soldiers from the Nigerian Army, 86 from the Navy, 35 from the Air Force, and two from the Defence Intelligence Agency.
At the ceremony, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, commended the officers for their commitment and discipline throughout their careers.
He noted that the training prepared them for life after service.
โThis six-month training has equipped you with the knowledge and skills to transition effectively into civil life, becoming resourceful managers, entrepreneurs, and contributors to national development,โ he said.
Drawing on a local adage, โSoja come, soja go, but barracks remain,โ Abubakar reflected on the enduring legacy of the military.
โWhile you may no longer wear the military uniform daily, the discipline, courage, and commitment that defined your careers will continue to inspire those who follow in your footsteps, ensuring the strength of the military remains steadfast,โ he added.
Abubakar urged the retirees to remain pillars of strength in their communities, contributing to peace and progress.
NAFRC Commandant Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Bashir Mamman highlighted that the centre has trained over 51,000 personnel for post-service life, equipping them with self-reliance and managerial skills.
He emphasised ongoing efforts to make NAFRC a leading institution for vocational and management training.
The retirement ceremony marked a new chapter for the officers, with Abubakar assuring them of a bright future filled with opportunities and challenges.
โWith God on your side, you will enjoy a prosperous future, filled with long life, good health, and a sound mind,โ he said.
