IN a move that is set to shake up the Nigerian football scene, Sporting Lagos have announced the signing of highly-rated goalkeeper Ifeanyi Nchekwube.
The talented shot-stopper joins the ambitious Lagos-based club from Akwa United where he spent three successful years.
Nchekwubeโs impressive credentials include two invitations to Nigeriaโs U23 national football squad, the Dream Team, in 2021 and 2022.
His experience and skillset are expected to significantly boost Sporting Lagosโs push for promotion back to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
Speaking on his move to Sporting Lagos, Nchekwube expressed his excitement and honour at joining the club.
โI have been following Sporting Lagosโs progress for a long time, and I must say, I have been impressed with the trajectory the club is going,โ he said.
โWhen they reached out to me, I couldnโt say no. Itโs a dream come true for me.โ
Nchekwube acknowledged Akwa Unitedโs role in his development: โThe last three years have been a learning stage for me. I thank Akwa United for trusting me.โ
However, he is now eager to showcase his true quality at Sporting Lagos, stating, โItโs time for the world to see my true quality.โ
The goalkeeper has set ambitious targets for himself and his new club. โMy dream is to win a trophy with this great club and help them return to the Premier League.
โOn a personal note, I want to keep as many clean sheets as possible,โ he said.
With his sights set on returning to the national team, Nchekwube is confident that his move to Sporting Lagos will be a defining moment in his career.
Sporting Lagos, currently competing in the second tier, is expected to mount a strong challenge for promotion back to the NPFL with Nchekwube and other new signings on board.
