The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of 20 bodies and the rescue of 11 survivors after a boat capsized on River Benue in Agatu Local Government Area on Saturday night.
The tragic incident occurred when a wooden canoe carrying traders collided with a tree while travelling to Odenyi in Nasarawa State.
Passengers, who had just left the Ocholonya market in Agatu, reportedly ignored warnings about overloading and set off around 8 pm, eager to return home despite the risks.
Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, stated, “So far, 20 bodies have been recovered from the river, and 11 people have been rescued alive. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.”
The victims were mainly traders who frequently used the route. Local sources noted that such mishaps are common, as many passengers disregard safety precautions.
Efforts are underway to retrieve the remaining victims and investigate the cause of the accident.
