The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been crowned as the Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, currently taking place in Marrakech, Morocco.
The Nigerian team claimed the prestigious award ahead of Banyana Banyana of South Africa and the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, who were also in contention for the accolade.
Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), received the award on behalf of the Super Falcons and dedicated the recognition to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support for women’s football in the country.
The Super Falcons’ triumph follows a significant year where the team qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 16 years.
They were one of two African teams to compete at the Paris Olympics earlier this year. However, the Falcons faced a disappointing outing, failing to advance beyond the group stage after losing all their matches.
This contrasted with their stellar 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign, where they reached the Round of 16, delivering outstanding performances.
In the men’s category, the Super Eagles of Nigeria missed out on the Men’s National Team of the Year award, as the Elephants of Ivory Coast claimed the honor.
This latest recognition further solidifies the Super Falcons’ status as a powerhouse in African women’s football, celebrating their resilience and achievements despite recent setback.
