The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI) announced on Wednesday that the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion centres in Nigeria has reached 170, marking a significant milestone in the nationโs clean energy drive.
The latest figure was achieved with the commissioning of Portland Gas Conversion Centre in Kado, Abuja.
P-CNGI CEO Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi expressed confidence that the figure would reach 200 by the end of December 2024.
โBefore the end of the year, I promise we will reach 200 within the next two weeks. We are already looking for and certifying at least another 35 to 40 on our records.
โI believe we will get to 40 at the end of this year. And that is double our target. You remember this time last year, I told you our target was 100 and now 200,โ Oluwagbemi said.
Looking ahead, he projected even more ambitious growth, โNext year, we have set a target of 500 for us and I believe we will blow past it.โ
Highlighting the role of private-sector investment, he recalled that the initiative has expanded from just seven conversion centres in 2023 to the current 170.
He noted, โSo today, from seven to 170, there is not a single one of those that were built by the Federal Government of Nigeria.โ
