A stampede occurred in Okija, Ihiala local Government Area of Anambra State, has reportedly claimed 17 lives.
The incident occurred during the distribution of rice by Obijackson Foundation officials on Saturday.
According to a video on X, the victims, who were primarily women and young people, arrived at the facility as early as 5 a.m. on Saturday for the rice distribution.
The incident took place at a facility owned by the Obijackson Foundation in Amarata, Ohalegbu village, Okija.
Residents of Ihiala local government and nearby villages are said to visit the facility annually to receive food aide.
The injured were reportedly taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, while the dead were taken to nearby mortuaries.
As of the time of filing this report, the state police command has yet to confirmย theย incident.
