Alex Iwobi Opens Free Christmas Food Shop for Families in Need

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has launched a temporary shop named ‘Alexpress’ in Canning Town, East London, to provide free food for underprivileged families during the festive season.

The shop, situated in the community where the Everton star grew up, is stocked with various food items displayed neatly in rows—all available at no cost.

Families visiting the pop-up store can select essentials for their households, including drinks, pantry staples, and even a turkey to complete their Christmas celebrations.

Speaking with the BBC, Iwobi credited his parents as his inspiration for the initiative, describing them as his lifelong role models who instilled in him the importance of giving back.

“This is where I was raised for my primary school education,” Iwobi said. “People, families are going to come in. They select a drink and the stuff for the house.

There are different foods that they can take, and by the end of it, there is a turkey.”

He added, “‘Alexpress’ is a minimart to try to give out food to families that are not able to get food for Christmas.

If I can help them celebrate Christmas, why not? Just seeing how my parents are, I have always seen them give back.

And with that as my role models, I feel like when I am in a position I am today, or even if I was in a lesser position, I would try my best to give back and help the less fortunate and people who are not able to eat.”

Iwobi, 28, has increasingly revealed facets of his life outside of football. In October, he disclosed to TheCable that he has been making music since he was 14.

The footballer has since released two singles, including What’s Luv, which debuted on October 31.

This initiative adds to Iwobi’s growing reputation as a multi-talented athlete with a heart for philanthropy, showcasing his commitment to uplifting communities in need, both in Nigeria and abroad.

With Alexpress, Iwobi aims to spread holiday cheer to families who might otherwise struggle to afford festive meals.

His efforts serve as a reminder of the power of giving back and the impact athletes can have off the pitch.

Families in Canning Town now have a brighter Christmas to look forward to, thanks to Iwobi’s generosity and dedication to his roots.
