There was an attack Sunday night at Ri Do, a hamlet in Riyom local government area of Plateau state, leaving 14 people dead and one injured.
The reason for the attack remains unknown.
Irigwe Development Association (IDA) said in a statement issued Monday evening by its national publicity secretary, Sam Jugo, that the attack which led to the killing of their people, remains unknown.
“The leadership of Irigwe Development Association (IDA) has been notified of an attack that occurred during the night of Sunday at Ri Do, a hamlet of Riyom LGA, Plateau state, predominantly inhabited by Irigwe natives from Bassa LGA.
“We immediately dispatched an executive member to the scene to verify the extent and scope of the carnage,” the statement read in parts.
The association added that reports from its emissary indicate that 14 persons were murdered in cold blood, whereas one lady was injured and she is receiving medical attention at an undisclosed location.
“The identities of the perpetrators have not yet been ascertained as at press time and therefore it will be ill conceived to state it here not to preempt or interfere with the outcome of ongoing investigations by the security agencies,” the statement further reads.
The Irigwe people appealed for restraint, and hoped that the security agencies will do the needful to nip probable reoccurrence and/or reprisals in the bud.
“Our hearts bleed for the demise of our kinsmen with whom we hoped to spend this Yuletide together but their lives were cut short. May their souls rest in peace with our maker and we pray to God to comfort their immediate families and the Rigwe nation,” the association said.
Blueprint correspondent reports that neither the police, military nor state government spokespersons responded to calls and text messages made to their phones as at the time of filing this report.
