Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called for increased collaboration among South-South governors to promote sustainable development and address shared challenges in the Niger Delta region.
Governor Fubara made this appeal during a Christmas visit by Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, and a delegation of Bayelsa leaders to Government House, Port Harcourt, on Saturday.
Highlighting the critical need for synergy, Governor Fubara emphasized the dangers of disunity and lack of cooperation among sister states, which hinder the region’s growth.
He pointed out that many Bayelsans live in Rivers State while working in Bayelsa, underscoring the importance of joint efforts in areas like security, infrastructure, and connectivity.
“In fact, one of the assignments I will want His Excellency, the Governor of Bayelsa, to carry on with is this: let us strengthen the BRACED Commission,” Fubara said.
“We can’t solve security and development issues in Rivers alone because criminals and other challenges transcend state boundaries. Only a united approach across Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, and Edo can truly bring sustainable solutions.”
Governor Fubara also stressed the need to protect the region’s oil resources, noting the substantial investments both states make in maintaining internal security.
He praised the peace achieved in Rivers and Bayelsa, attributing it to divine intervention and a commitment to good leadership.
In response, Governor Douye Diri expressed gratitude for the warm reception and acknowledged the strong bonds between the two states.
He lauded Governor Fubara for fostering peace and understanding, especially regarding contentious issues like the Soku oil wells.
“We’ve agreed to revert to the status quo and have directed our Attorneys General to address the matter amicably,” Governor Diri stated.
“Since Governor Fubara assumed office, we’ve seen heart-warming resolutions to previous disagreements, signaling a new era of peace and cooperation.”
Governor Diri also highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Bayelsa and Rivers and pledged continued collaboration to resolve boundary issues and promote regional stability.
The visit marked a strengthening of the relationship between the two states, setting the stage for further collaboration to achieve mutual goals for the South-South region.
