President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has greenlit the creation of a federal university in Southern Kaduna, marking a transformative step towards meeting the region’s educational and developmental aspirations.
The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a weekend condolence visit to the Kukah family in the Ikulu Kingdom, Zangon Kataf council area of Kaduna State.
The visit followed the passing of His Highness, Yohanna Sidi Kukah, the Agwom Akulu of Ikulu Chiefdom and a relative of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto.
According to a statement released on the 30th of December, 2024, by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima said: “With Senator Katung and the member of the House of Representatives, we have reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he has consented to the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna.”
In addition to this significant announcement, Shettima revealed plans to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, emphasizing the federal government’s commitment to improving healthcare and education in the region.
While addressing mourners at the late traditional ruler’s residence, Shettima highlighted the administration’s dedication to Southern Kaduna’s progress, pointing to General Christopher Musa’s appointment as Chief of Defence Staff as an example of the President’s focus on regional security.
He reassured the people, saying: “Be rest assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the people of Kaduna and the people of Southern Kaduna at heart.”
The Vice President also praised Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for fostering inclusivity in governance, stating: “Government is about linking all component parts to have a sense of belonging.”
He affirmed the federal government’s collaboration with the state to advance Southern Kaduna’s development, particularly in improving road infrastructure.
Earlier, Bishop Kukah expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the family and the Ikulu community, acknowledging the Vice President’s efforts and raising concerns about the state of local infrastructure.
“It took you around three and a half hours to get here. The road is largely broken. I know you will remain a friend of this Ikulu nation and a friend of this community. We are honoured to have you,” the Bishop said.
This series of commitments underscores the federal government’s intent to bring impactful changes to Southern Kaduna’s socio-economic landscape.
