The Federal High Court in Abuja has set January 6, 2025 to rule on a bail application filed by Olamide Thomas, accused of threatening Seyi Tinubu with death in a viral social media video.
Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the case after hearing arguments from both defence and prosecution on Tuesday. T.J. Aondo, Thomas’ counsel, urged the court to grant bail, citing constitutional provisions and assurances that Thomas would not flee.
Prosecuting counsel Victor Okoye opposed the request, arguing that Thomas provided no medical report to support claims of ill health and challenged the admissibility of certain exhibits.
Okoye contended, “Documents extracted from the internet and newspaper publications must be certified under the Evidence Act. We urge the court to refuse bail.”
Aondo countered, saying the prosecution failed to raise substantial concerns about Thomas’ likelihood to jump bail.
“The court’s discretion under Section 6(6) of the Constitution cannot be limited by these arguments,” he said.
Justice Nwite said the case file would be sent back to the Chief Judge after his ruling, as his tenure as a vacation judge ends that day.
Thomas, arraigned on 20 December 2024, faces three counts under the Cybercrimes Act.
Prosecutors allege she made threatening remarks in Yoruba targeting Seyi Tinubu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Police PRO Muyiwa Adejobi.
The charges accuse her of placing her victims in fear of death and bodily harm, with the alleged offences punishable under Section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes Act.
Thomas pleaded not guilty and remains in custody at Suleja Correctional Centre.
