Officials of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Jordan, which oversees Iraq, have successfully intervened to return a 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Eniola Isaac, who was trafficked to Iraq under false pretenses.
Isaac was allegedly promised a better life, but instead faced severe abuse and mistreatment by her employer in Iraq.
The troubling case came to light on Wednesday, and it prompted immediate action by Nigerian authorities.
After enduring physical assaults and various forms of abuse, Isaac appealed for help, requesting assistance to return to Nigeria.
NiDCOM confirmed on Thursday that Isaac is set to be flown back to Nigeria on January 3rd, following the intervention of the Nigerian mission in Jordan.
The commission also highlighted the rising concern over the trafficking of Nigerians to Iraq, often through deceptive promises that end in exploitation, including forced labor, slavery, and prostitution.
The commission’s statement also drew attention to another ongoing investigation into the suspicious death of another Nigerian woman who had been lured to Iraq for work as a carer.
NiDCOM has demanded an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
In light of these incidents, NiDCOM has issued a warning about unscrupulous agents who continue to deceive young Nigerian women, luring them into dangerous situations under the guise of employment opportunities.
The commission urges vigilance and caution to prevent further exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
