Police operatives in Imo State have rescued four kidnapped victims during a daring operation in Umuokanne, Ohaji Local Government Area.
Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi revealed in a statement on Sunday that the rescue occurred on Saturday after police responded to a distress call.
“The operatives swiftly swung into action, locating the criminal hideout and engaging the kidnappers in a fierce gun duel, during which two of the kidnappers were neutralised,” Adejobi said.
The police recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 21 rounds of live ammunition.
Adejobi reaffirmed the police’s commitment to tackling crimes, assuring the public of continued efforts to rid the society of criminal elements.
In Ebonyi State, police arrested 17 suspects on Friday in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo Local Government Area, for the murder of Uromchi Okorocha, who was accused by locals of using witchcraft to kill people.
Adejobi stated that the suspects had apprehended Okorocha but chose to kill and burn him instead of handing him over to law enforcement.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, condemned the act of jungle justice.
“Citizens are urged to refrain from taking laws into their hands and report any suspected criminal activities to the nearest police division,” he said.
He emphasised the force’s commitment to public safety and justice, urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies in creating a safer society.
