The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has ramped up its crackdown on suspected vandals allegedly involved in the theft of sewage manhole covers across Abuja.
In a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the FCTA reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the menace.
Wike revealed that efforts are in full swing to apprehend not just the vandals but also their collaborators, including the buyers of these stolen manhole covers.
He emphasized that the relevant authorities have been directed to work tirelessly to curb the act of vandalism, promising that the public would be updated as progress is made.
Expressing his dismay, Wike condemned the audacity of individuals who remove manhole covers from highways for resale, thereby endangering the lives of road users.
The minister assured citizens that the FCTA would spare no effort in ensuring the perpetrators face justice.
“Overall, it’s good to see that people are taking this issue seriously and working together to address it,” he said.
“The FCT Administration is taking this seriously, working to stop this vandalism and keep the city safe. It’s worth noting that this isn’t just a matter of theft, but also a safety issue, as these stolen covers can put road users at risk,” Wike concluded.
