The Niger State Government has announced a strategic exemption for specific properties from its upcoming land use charges, reinforcing a commitment to equitable land administration.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Barr. Maurice Bello Magaji, the exemptions will cover “places of worship, old people’s homes, correctional facilities, Emir’s palaces, and residences of senior citizens.”
Magaji explained that the government has finalized plans to introduce the land use charge to enhance effective and efficient land administration.
This initiative aims to consolidate all property and land-based rates under the State Revenue Harmonisation Law.
The charges will be determined based on property assessments, taking into account factors such as location, purpose, and type.
Aligning with international best practices, the land use charge is designed to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), ensuring the provision of improved social amenities.
Governor Muhammad Umar Bago has also approved the upgrade of the state’s Geographical Information System (GIS), which, according to the statement, will revolutionize land management.
“This upgrade will enable the government to identify areas of interest, particularly agricultural lands, and generate data for planning purposes, including house numbering,” the statement revealed.
Additionally, the upgraded GIS will streamline land acquisition, enhance data accuracy, and improve the overall management of land resources, positioning Niger State for sustainable development and modernized land administration.
