Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, was sentenced to an unconditional discharge on Friday for covering up hush money payments to a porn star.

The ruling comes despite his efforts to avoid becoming the first felon to assume the presidency.

New York Judge Juan Merchan, while delivering the sentence during a virtual court session attended by Trump, stated:

โ€œThis court has determined that the only lawful sentence that permits entry of a judgment of conviction without encroaching on the highest office of the land, is an unconditional discharge.โ€

The case marks a historic moment, with Trump now heading to the White House under the cloud of a criminal conviction.
