The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted claims that incumbent local government chairmen seeking re-election were directed to resign ahead of the 2025 council polls.
In a statement on Monday evening, the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, dismissed the reports as false and misleading.
“Our attention has been drawn to a false directive purportedly issued by the Lagos State Chairman of APC, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, to incumbent council chairmen, who intend to seek re-election, to resign from their offices,” Oladejo stated.
He emphasised that there was no truth in the publication, which he claimed was twisted to serve the publisher’s interests.
Clarifying the matter, Oladejo explained that the directive only applied to local government party chairmen vying for elective positions, as they could not serve as both umpires and contestants.
“The local government party chairmen, who double as aspirants in the coming elections, for emphasis, will be required to resign their current positions when the guidelines are released,” he said.
He urged party members and the public to avoid spreading misinformation capable of creating unnecessary tension.
Oladejo also noted that the party was awaiting electoral guidelines from the newly reconstituted Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
He called on party members to promote unity and support activities that strengthen cohesion within the APC.
