Following the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that the death toll has risen to 86.
According to a press statement issued by NSEMA Director General Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the remains of the deceased were recovered and buried in a coordinated effort by NSEMA, Gurara LGA authorities, and volunteers.
Of the victims, 80 were buried in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Healthcare (PHC) premises, while five others were handed over to their families for burial within the town.
Another victim succumbed to injuries at the Dikko PHC.
The mass burial, which took place between 5 p.m. and midnight, was described as a somber and challenging task.
It involved dedicated volunteers who ensured the proper handling of the deceased.
In addition to the fatalities, the number of injured individuals has climbed to 55, with one fatality recorded at the healthcare facility in Dikko.
Governor Umaru Bago visited the scene of the explosion and described the incident as “pathetic.” He thanked God that the tragedy did not extend to adjoining communities, averting further devastation.
The governor directed that vehicles coming from the Maje axis should no longer pass through the Dikko Bridge, urging the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to establish a detachment in the area for enforcement.
Drivers were instructed to use the underbridge and make proper U-turns.
Governor Bago also called on the Federal Government to expedite the completion of the Minna-Suleja Road, emphasizing that delays in the project have contributed to the continuous loss of lives.
The Niger State Government has also deployed doctors from Minna hospitals to assist in treating the injured at Suleja General Hospital.
NSEMA, in collaboration with other agencies, continues to provide support to affected families and manage the disaster’s aftermath.
The agency praised the efforts of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, fire service, and other groups involved in the evacuation and treatment of victims.
This incident underscores the need for stricter safety measures, enhanced public awareness, and better road infrastructure to prevent future occurrences.
