President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to begin a nationwide campaign to educate Nigerians on the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, following a tragic explosion in Niger State.
The incident, which occurred at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, claimed over 80 lives and left many injured. Most of the victims were reportedly scooping Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the overturned tanker before it exploded.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced the directive in a statement on Sunday.
“The President has mandated the National Orientation Agency to initiate a nationwide educational campaign.
“This campaign will raise public awareness about the severe risks and environmental dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers,” Onanuga said.
President Tinubu expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Niger State, describing the incident as both tragic and preventable.
He also urged Nigerians to avoid accident sites involving fuel-laden vehicles due to their explosive nature.
“The President strongly advises all citizens to exercise caution and avoid approaching accident sites, especially those involving fuel-laden vehicles, due to their highly explosive nature,” Onanuga added.
The President further directed that comprehensive medical care be provided for the injured and tasked security and road safety authorities with implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
