The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has said that poor roads and fuel scooping practices are the leading causes of the Niger Tanker fire incident that claimed lives of over 87 people.
The NUPENG President Williams Akporeh said this in a condolence message.
Over the weekend, a tanker exploded at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.
Akporeha expressed deep regret for the loss of lives, properties damaged, and injuries resulting from the incident.
He called for immediate action to prevent future occurrences.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time,” he said
The NUPENG boss consoled the families of the deceased over the incident.
The union emphasised its commitment to safety through annual collaboration and partnering with agencies like the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Police, and State Traffic Management.
NUPENG said it provides essential training for drivers on safety protocols.
According to the unuon, the ngoing training programs and continuously educating members on best driving practices to ensure road safety.
He commended emergency responders for their efforts in extinguishing the fire and aiding the injured, while urging all relevant authorities to provide necessary medical care and support to the victims.
Akporeha said, “May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to cope with these profound losses.”
