The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has criticised social media support for the suspect who killed one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu, while on duty in Anambra State.
Salisu was fatally shot on Friday, January 17, 2025, during a raid to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters in Awka.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, expressed the Commission’s grief and condemned narratives defending the alleged killer, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, expresses grief on the loss of one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASEII Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was killed in cold blood while on a legitimate duty on January 17, 2025, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu,” the statement read.
The EFCC described the online support for Ikechukwu as “irresponsible, callous, inhuman, and outrageous,” stressing that there is no justification for such a murderous act.
The incident occurred when Salisu and his team attempted to arrest internet fraud suspects at a building in Awka.
While 37 individuals were arrested peacefully, Ikechukwu allegedly refused to cooperate, opened fire on the officers, and killed Salisu while injuring another.
“Preliminary investigations showed that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and online medical supplies of doubtful legitimacy,” the EFCC stated, adding that he is in police custody and will face trial.
The Commission also warned of the growing threat posed by internet fraudsters, whom they accused of arming themselves and engaging in crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings.
The EFCC vowed to respond decisively to any attacks on its personnel, stating, “As for the EFCC, every subsequent attack on any of its officers will be met with the force of the law.”
While mourning Salisu, the Commission expressed gratitude to sister agencies and individuals who have shown support during this period.
“While mourning the loss of its officer who paid the supreme price in the service of the nation, the Commission appreciates the invaluable support, condolences, and prompt response of sister agencies and well-meaning individuals standing shoulder to shoulder with it at this trying time,” the statement concluded.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption and internet fraud in Nigeria.
