The Nigerian military has confirmed the killing of the son of notorious terrorist Bello Turji during a raid on the Fakai high ground in Zamfara State.
Military spokesperson, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the younger Turji was killed on Friday alongside numerous other terrorists during a coordinated operation by troops of ‘Operation Hadarin Daji’ and the military’s air component.
Although the age of Turji’s son was not revealed, General Buba indicated that he was actively involved as a combatant.
“The operation was conducted on 17 January along the Shinkafi, Kagara, Fakai, Moriki, Maiwa, and Chindo axis,” Buba said. “The intensity of troops’ firepower resulted in high terrorist casualties and the destruction of their logistics hub.”
He further stated that several hostages held captive by Turji’s group were rescued during the raid. However, the terrorist leader himself managed to escape.
“The terrorist leader, Bello Turji, in a gross cowardly act, abandoned his son and combatants to escape,” Buba added.
Turji, infamous for orchestrating attacks, kidnappings, and killings in the northwest, is known for releasing videos taunting the military.
His escape from Friday’s operation suggests he may continue his activities.
In a separate development, troops destroyed another terrorist camp operated by Idi Mallam in the Zango Kagara Forest.
During the raid, three terrorists were killed, three suspected collaborators were apprehended, and various items, including two machine guns, an AK-47 rifle, 61 rustled cattle, and 44 sheep, were recovered.
General Buba reaffirmed the military’s dedication to ensuring the safety and protection of citizens.
“Troops are sustaining the onslaught against the terrorists, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the security of the country,” he said.
