Suspended Edo FEWMA boss denies involvement in unauthorised turbaning

The suspended Executive Director of the Edo State Flood Erosion and Watershed Management Agency, Ahmed Momoh, has distanced himself from the recent turbaning of chiefs and village heads by the Aidenogie of South-Ibie Kingdom in Etsako West Local Government Area.

Momoh was suspended last week by Governor Monday Okpebholo over allegations of insubordination linked to the ceremony, which reportedly took place without the state government’s approval.

However, addressing journalists in Benin on Wednesday, the embattled FEWMA boss insisted he had no connection to the event, explaining that he was in the area strictly for official duties.

According to him, he was in Edo North to assess erosion sites as directed by officials of the European Investment Bank, who were in the state from Abuja for an on-the-spot inspection.

“In the course of carrying out my duties, I had to visit some communities and engage with traditional rulers as required by EIB and World Bank standards,” Momoh stated.

He added, “I visited three traditional rulers where there were reports of gully erosion sites. I am not aware of any turbaning ceremony, even though it took place in my community. My uncle, the community head, invited me for a reception, but I declined.

“I have never gone against any government directive, and I will never do so. That would be gross insubordination. As a religious leader in my community and the state, it is not in my character to undermine the government. It is simply not possible,” he added.

Momoh reiterated that his visit to Edo North was solely to inspect erosion sites and submit reports to the EIB.

He also reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Okpebholo, expressing regret over the controversy and pledging to support the administration in delivering on its campaign promises.
