Nollywood actress Precious Osayande has shared her thoughts on the recent prohibition against the public wearing of traditional chieftaincy outfits associated with the Oba of Benin, his wives, the royal family, and titled chiefs during events.
The Benin Tradition Council has specified that items like the round coral bead (lkele), Eben (ceremonial word), and Okuku (headgear for the Oba’s wives) are now banned.
PMNews reported that a group of seven palace chiefs declared in a statement that wearing traditional chieftaincy costumes by those outside the royal family is a violation and disrespect to Benin customs.
They mentioned that these outfits are being used by “uneducated and dissatisfied people” at marriage and funeral ceremonies.
A viral video showed priests and priestesses invoking the spirits of the Benin ancestors. They were speaking out against those who misuse the Ada and Eben symbols and wear the Okuku hairstyle without being linked to the palace.

The actress who backed the ban argued that there is no difference between the royal family and those in traditional costumes.
She also called out crossdresser James Brown, hinting that he influenced the Oba of Benin’s decision to enforce the ban.
Osanyade also encouraged everyone to heed the warning and stop wearing traditional costumes.
