Tanimu funds U-15 tourney in Edo
Former Bendel Insurance defender, Benjamin Tanimu has teamed up with Edo State Football Association to bankroll a football tournament in the state.
The tournament, tagged Benjamin Tanimu U-15 Football Tournament is tentatively fixed for March 1 to April and it is meant to inspire as well as support talented young people.
At a press conference on Monday, the Edo State FA Chairman, Fred Erhunmwunse, said that the registration for the inaugural edition had commenced immediately, adding that school kids between ages 13 and 15 were the target of the tournament.
He added that birth certificates and last-term academic results would be used for screening.
“The tournament is open for teams from across the three senatorial districts of the state and that equal opportunity is given for unlimited slots until the registration deadline,” he said.
The player’s manager and representative, Bature Tanimu, said that the Crawley Town defender’s interest was to contribute to talent discovery in Edo and Nigeria.
He said the tournament also serves as a platform for giving back to the society which gave him the platform to excel.
According to the organisers, the winners will go home with N500,000, first Runners-up get N300,000, the third place team will smile home with N200,000 in addition to individual prizes for overall top performers.
Also, there will be provision for free jerseys at the final stages of the tournament courtesy of Tanimu, while there will be a special award for the best defender in honour of the tournament’s sponsor.
