2027 Elections: Atiku, Obasanjo Map Out Plans
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is in a closed-door meeting with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
The meeting, which began around 1:07 PM on Sunday, February 10, 2025, has fueled political speculation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, arrived with former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce.
While details of their discussions remain undisclosed, sources suggest it is part of broader efforts to forge an opposition strategy against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A source, speaking anonymously, said political alliances were being explored. “This is not just a courtesy visit. There is a growing realization that the opposition must work together to have a real chance in 2027,” the source stated.
The meeting is significant given Obasanjo’s political influence. The former president, who has criticized the current administration, has played a key role in past elections and remains a major force in Nigerian politics.
Atiku has spoken about the country’s economic challenges under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recently calling for reforms. “Nigeria cannot afford another four years of failed leadership,” he said at a recent event.
With the opposition facing internal divisions, this meeting could be the start of a coalition aimed at unseating the APC in 2027. Whether Obasanjo will back a particular candidate remains uncertain.
