BUK to Confer Emeritus Title on Professor Borodo at 39th Convocation

Bayero University Kano (BUK) will confer the title of Emeritus Professor on Professor Musa Mohammed Borodo during its 39th Convocation Ceremony.

At a pre-convocation press briefing, the Vice-Chancellor of BUK, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, said “Professor Borodo’s contributions to medical education and research are immense. His dedication to training future medical professionals and advancing healthcare knowledge has left a lasting impact not only on BUK but also on Nigeria’s medical community. His recognition as an Emeritus Professor is well deserved.”

Professor Borodo joined BUK in November 1990 as a Senior Lecturer and was the pioneer head of the Department of Medicine. He served as the founding Nigerian Dean of the Medical School from 1992 to 1996.

A colleague from the university described him as “a mentor and a visionary leader whose commitment to medical education and research is unparalleled.”

He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and supervised more than 25 dissertations in Internal Medicine for medical colleges in Nigeria and West Africa. His expertise includes epidemiology, viral hepatitis, medical ethics, and medical education.

“His work in gastroenterology and non-communicable diseases has shaped national policies and research in Nigeria,” a senior medical scholar noted. “He has not only trained generations of doctors but has also helped set high academic standards in medical education.”

Professor Borodo has served on national and international medical boards, including the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. He has also contributed to medical accreditation and curriculum development in several universities.

Dr. Bashir Mohammed, a former student, remarked, “This honor is not just for him but for the entire medical education community in Nigeria.”

The 39th Convocation Ceremony will also include the awarding of honorary degrees to two Nigerians and the graduation of students across multiple disciplines.
