Billionaires Rally Behind Babangida’s Legacy with N17.5bn Donations

Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), raised over N16 billion on Thursday from the public presentation of his autobiography and the launch of his presidential library.

The book, A Journey in Service, was unveiled at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja alongside the inauguration of Babangida’s presidential library.

Business figures and individuals who had ties to his administration made significant donations. Aliko Dangote pledged N8 billion, to be paid in installments of N2 billion annually over four years. Abdulsamad Rabiu contributed N5 billion, while Theophilus Danjuma donated N3 billion.

Other donations included N500 million from Arthur Eze, N250 million from Senator Sani Musa, N50 million from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, N20 million from the Deputy Senate President, and N10 million from Senator Aliyu Wadada. Folorunsho Alakija also made an undisclosed contribution.

President Bola Tinubu attended, along with former leaders Goodluck Jonathan, Yakubu Gowon, and Abdulsalami Abubakar. Also present were former vice presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, and Yemi Osinbajo, as well as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo delivered the keynote address, and former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Koroma was in attendance. The event was attended by governors, government officials, business figures, and traditional rulers.
