Is NNPP Losing Kawu Sumaila? Party Leaders Shun His Daughters’ Wedding

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, were absent at the wedding Fatiha of the daughters of Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District.

The wedding took place on Friday at the Tsoho Ma’aji Juma’at Mosque in Sumaila Town, Sumaila Local Government Area, attracting a large turnout of political figures, particularly from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite Senator Kawu Sumaila being elected under the NNPP, most of the dignitaries in attendance were from the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Notable attendees included the National Chairman of the APC and former Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Deputy Senate President Barau Ibrahim Jibrin; Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; former Senate President Ahmed Lawan; and former Kano State Governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.

The Kano State APC leadership, led by its chairman, Abdullahi Abbas Sanusi, was also present.

A source within Senator Kawu Sumaila’s camp, who preferred anonymity, disclosed that formal invitations were sent to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, but neither attended.

“The senator personally ensured that invitations reached the governor and Senator Kwankwaso, but they chose not to attend. It is surprising, considering that he is a key member of their party,” the source said.

Kano Times learned that neither Governor Yusuf nor Senator Kwankwaso sent a representative to the wedding.

The wedding coincided with the first convocation ceremony of Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, which was held on Saturday. The convocation attracted high-profile figures, including the APC national chairman, the deputy senate president, and the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

During his speech at the convocation, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje described Senator Kawu Sumaila as a political ally.

“Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, you are one of the most thoughtful politicians in Kano. We share the same vision, political direction, and belong to the same camp,” Ganduje said.

Efforts to reach Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson for the Kano State governor, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
