Protests Rock FUDMA as Security Operatives Kill Student

A protest broke out on Friday at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), Katsina State, after local vigilantes allegedly killed a student in Dutsin-Ma town.  

Students blocked the Dutsin-Ma–Katsina highway, set tires on fire, and disrupted traffic.

The deceased, identified as Sa’id Abdulkadir, was a 400-level student in the Faculty of Agriculture. There are conflicting accounts regarding the circumstances of his death.

Some reports suggest he was suspected of being a bandit informant, while others claim he was mistakenly shot by security operatives while riding a commercial motorcycle.

Sources said security personnel attempted to stop the motorcycle carrying Abdulkadir and another rider, but they did not stop. The operatives allegedly opened fire, killing Abdulkadir on the spot. The commercial motorcyclist sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital.

A student who spoke on condition of anonymity told Kano Times, “We are devastated by Sa’id’s death. He was a peaceful person, and the way he was killed is unjustifiable. We want those responsible to be held accountable.”

Another student, also speaking anonymously, said, “We took to the streets because we are tired of living in fear. If security operatives can kill a student so easily, then no one is safe. We demand justice and transparency in this matter.”

Following the incident, students marched in protest, demanding justice for Abdulkadir.

Security forces, including soldiers and police officers, were deployed to disperse the protesters and clear the highway.

A final-year student expressed concern over the increasing tension, saying, “Instead of addressing our grievances, they sent security forces to silence us. We need answers, not threats.”
